Welcome to Cape Sable Island...
On our Island there are 2 museums... the Archelaus Smith Museum in Centreville and the Seaside Heritage Centre in Clarks Harbour... both are worth your time. At the Seaside Heritage Centre you may be in time to hear local storytellers, or to see local craftspeople ply there trades. If you happen to miss them, enquire with the guide as to the times they are at the site... it will bring the Island to life. The Archelaus Smith Museum is home to many local artifacts and 'treasures'... see early housewares and wonderful seafaring items... there are lovely paintings and fantastic local genealogy facts and photos. Both are seasonal in operation and open times vary. In Barrington there are several more museums- The Seal Island Lighthouse- a reducee scale replica of the Original wooden structure lighthouse on Seal Island (20 miles of our coast), The Military Museum, The Old Meeting House (the oldest non-conformist meeting house in Canada) and the Woolen Mill - up until the 1960's this mill produced wool and wool products. See its history and experience all the rigors of early textile making. Ask to see the water powered wheel...many wonderful exhibits. These museums are all clustered at the Barrington River, just down the road from the new (2004) Visitor (Tourist) Information Center.
In addition to the great local museums, there are also other 'points of interest' that should not be missed while in the area.
The petrified forest at The Hawk Beach is unique- plan to spend the day enjoying this beautiful white sand beach!
The UFO landing site in Shag Harbour- they even have a "The Site of the 1967 UFO Visit" cancellation stamp at the Shag Harbour post office- take your mail there and request that cancellation- it'll be a special treat for the family and friends at home! While in Shag Harbour you will also want to visit the Chapel Hill Museum... on a picture perfect day you can see 5 lighthouses from the bell tower (the building once served the community as its Baptist Church... you can climb up the tower and see all over the area!
Further on in Woods Harbour is the Samuel Woods Museum... another treasure trove of local history and genealogical facts and findings.
There are other smaller, less publicized 'sights'... right in Newellton, just a few doors up from the cottages are the Island's only (known) two Totem poles. At The Hawk are Canada's only documented pair of nesting Oyster Catchers (though these birds are seen in other areas of Canada, none are known to be nesting in this country other than these). Be sure to ask us about these things and others.
